Backpacking through Taiwan and want to see something different?

Make your way south to Xianliuqiu! It is pronounced, Shaow-lee-o-cho. I know right ;)

No matter where you are in Taiwan, you must make your way to Kaohsiung bus terminal.

I came from Taichung station which took about 3 hours to Kaohsiung bus terminal. This cost me 300 NTVD.

From there you will go to the building behind and buy a bus ticket to Tonggang (Donggang). It will cost you 120 NTD. It will take you about 1 hour to reach your bus stop. Get off near the McDonald's or Hospital.

From there, walk towards Dongliu Ferry Terminal where you can buy a ticket for 400 NTD round trip to Xianliuqiu. There will be many people asking if you are going there and they will help you buy a ticket.

Here is a timetable of when the ferries run.

If you are lucky enough, on the ferry, you will see dolphins swim along the ferry.

The ferry ride takes about 20 minutes from port to port.

One you arrive at the port, hopefully you already have an accommodation booked.

People will try to sell you the rental scooters among other things, but don't accept the first offer you get. Walk around and try to find your place first.

Xialiuqiu is only 12km around the island, so renting a scooter will be your best option. All scooters on the island are electric to save our environment.

You can zip around the island fairly easily. All you need to do is give the rental shop one piece of ID and a phone number. The scooter cost us 600 NTD for 24 hours.

Some of the best sites to see on Xialiuqiu include:

1) Swimming with the sea turtles at Flower Vase

You can see the turtles between 8 am and 3 pm

2) Banyan old tree

3) Watch the sunset at Sunset Pavillion

4) Eat local food at the markets

You can get food like pork noodles, dumplings, fired rice, soup, etc. It is really delicious!

5) Catch sunrise at Sunrise Pavilion

There are more things to here, it just depends on how much money you want to spend and how much time you have. I hope you have an amazing time at this incredible island in Taiwan!

Much love-

Anthony
